Massive computer attacks against several Norwegian companies

Monday, 02 July 2012
Big and leading Norwegian companies such as the Oslo Stock Exchange, Schibsted, DNB, PST, and the Norwegian Bettingas as well as and online newspapers have been attacked by hackers.

There are increasing problems faces by many big companies as the internet becomes the target for anarchies and online criminals who are bent to disrupt operational activities. Norwegian companies have seen their operations quarantined by internet hackers. Official there say that unlike in the past where companies could see their computer attached once a year, today attack takes place more than once a week.

It is the clearest trend observed recently in Norway and internationally according to information officer, of Telenor, Anders Krokan. Telenor has a Security Center that monitors customers' computer networks. He points out that its probability is the big unknown.

Telenor believes a major reason for the growth of cyber crime on the Web is that more and more assets and business processes are being processed here.

“It is easier to cheat on money from the people, and it is also easier to obtain sensitive information from companies,” says Krokan.

Oslo Stock Exchange was attacked last Wednesday. “We got massive unwanted traffic to the site. We closed them and has in recent days been working to rectify the problem,” says the exchange's communications manager, Guro Steine. She stressed that the trading system and other vital systems are not affected.

Oslo Stock Exchange is not alone. Several well-known Norwegian companies have in recent weeks suffered similar attacks, such as there become so much traffic to websites the web servers become unstable and black out.

Examples of such companies that are affected were various media, DNB, the Police Security Service, the Norwegian Lottery, several online newspapers and a host of others according to reports.

Recently it was announced that a hacker group claims they can take over central control systems that control water and electricity, both in Norway and other countries.

Officials in Norway points out that there are vulnerabilities in the Norwegian IT management systems.
“The problem is real and must be taken seriously. One of the horror scenarios is that someone takes control of the installations in the oil and energy,” said officials

Security Coordinator, Per Thorsheim og the IT giant, Evry also think they are seeing a sharp increase in serious computer attacks. He says that it is often difficult to figure out who is attacking.
