NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, fears of a new, violent unrest after a U.S. soldier has shot and killed 16 Afghan civilians.

The incident took place yesterday, when the soldier left his base and according to eyewitnesses went from house to house to kill, writes Reuters


Anders Fogh Rasmussen calls it a "terrible tragedy" and fears that Afghanistan will return to the turmoil that characterized the country since U.S. troops allegedly accidentally burned copies of the Koran.

In a statement by the NATO Secretary General on tragic incident in Kandahar Province
He said that
“I want to express my shock and sadness at the tragic shooting incident in Kandahar province, where it is reported that several people, including women and children, have been killed or wounded. I offer my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to their families and loved ones, and to the Afghan people and government.”

However, the NATO boss belief that the international coalition behind the war in Afghanistan can regain the confidence of local people.
“We remain firmly committed to our mission of building a strong and stable Afghanistan, together with our Afghan partners,” he said in the statement.

Yesterday, Anders Fogh Rasmussen in an interview Danish radio said that NATO troops may well remain in Afghanistan on till the other side of 2013, when combat mission will be handed over to Afghan security forces.
