Politicians were misled about Saudi arms Business
Wednesday, 21 March 2012
The politicians
in the Export Control Council who are appointed to check about the
Swedish arms exports were misled about the Swedish FOI front company
created to mask the connection the Swedish defence had to do with plans
for a weapons factory in Saudi Arabia.
Lars Angstrom
of the Green Party, representative on the Council, told radio Sweden of
the dribbling by FOI and also that the management of the Inspectorate
of Strategic Products (ISP) knew about the link between the company and
FOI, but did not tell the politicians.
“They ought to have been told,” says member, Bjorn Leivik of the Moderate Party.
A delegation
from Saudi Arabia in 2009 visited the Swedish armed forces top secret
command centre in Bålsta outside Stockholm. No unauthorized person can
see the facility, which during war time it should be used to control
Swedish troops.
“You and I must
not get in there, but they were admitted. Unbelievable,” says a source
from the armed forces to tabloid news paper, Expressen.
In a letter
from the then Swedish ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Jan Thesleff, to
representatives of the Saudi royal family, which the newspaper
published on Wednesday, it states that "a number of underground
facilities with different functions," were visited by the Saudi
delegation.
