Careless swedish official sent Secret Saudi-material via an unencrypted e-mail
Thursday, 15 March 2012
The notes from
secret talks with Saudi Arabia sent in an unencrypted e-mail via a
private hotmail account of an under-secretary at the Swedish Department
of Defense.
The email
passed through servers in several countries before reaching recipients
in Stockholm who are a colleague in the ministry, a foreign Department
official, the Director General of the Inspectorate of Strategic
Products (ISP) and a high FOI officer.
The road was wide open for the email to have leaked to foreign intelligence services, writes the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.
A senior
executive at Defense Department sent notes from secret talks with Saudi
Arabia through a private and insecure email. The Swedish government has
constantly emphasized at the high level to maintain confidentiality.
Sweden's secret
negotiations of arms deals with Saudi Arabia in 2008 could have been
leaked to foreign intelligence services. Some of the most sensitive
data in the case, call notes from a secret meeting with the Saudi
General Nasser, sent unencrypted from a private hotmail e-mail address.
It was Cecilia
Looström , Director of the Department of Defense, who sent the e-mail
to a colleague at the Department of Defense, a manager at the Foreign
Ministry, Director General of the Inspectorate of Strategic Products
(ISP) and a high official at the Defence Research Agency (FOI).
